Buster Welch (May 10, 1928 – June 12, 2024) was a highly influential American horse trainer and cutter. He achieved legendary status within the cutting horse world, renowned for his horsemanship skills and his ability to train horses that displayed exceptional talent and cow sense.
Welch won the prestigious National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA) World Championship five times: 1954, 1966, 1971, 1974 and 1976. These victories cemented his place as one of the sport's all-time greats. He was inducted into the NCHA Hall of Fame in 1976.
Beyond his championship titles, Buster Welch was respected for his traditional, natural approach to horse training. He emphasized understanding horses and working with their natural instincts. His methods were considered both effective and humane, contributing to his widespread admiration within the equestrian community. He lived and trained horses in the West Texas area for much of his life, becoming an icon of that region's ranching and horse training heritage.
